KRANTZ, THE OLDEST MINERAL DEALER IN GERMANY, AND THE HISTORICAL KRANTZ COLLECTION OF THE MINERAL MUSEUM IN BONN, GERMANY
Mineralogical-Petrological Institute and Mineral Museum, University of Bonn, Germany, R.Schumacher@uni-bonn.de
The first part of the talk will give an overview of the history of the mineral dealing business Krantz, a firm, which was founded by Adam August (A.A.) Krantz (photo 1, see Appendix 2) in 1833 and since then has been in the hands of family members [1].
The firm is worldwide well-known not only for dealing with minerals and rocks but also for providing research, field and teaching equipment. For example, many geoscientists will remember learning the basics of crystallography with the wooden crystal models by Krantz.
The second part of the talk is about the Mineral Museum of Bonn and its historical Krantz collection. The University of Bonn was founded in 1818 with a museum of natural history (mineralogy, geology and zoology) located in the Poppelsdorfer Schloss.
The location of the mineralogical collection and museum since then has been in the Poppelsdorfer Schloss, a rococo palace completed in 1756. After A.A. Krantz passed away, his private collection consisting of 14000 mineral specimens and 184 meteorites was purchased by the Prussian Minister of Culture for 144000 Goldmark and given to the Mineral Museum of Bonn. Even though most of the collection got destroyed during the Second World War, beautiful and interesting specimens are left which tell a story of worldwide travels by Krantz and his employees — also to St. Petersburg.
